Different equipment, different failure modes

Outdoor gyms were installed across Cornwall in a wave over the last decade, and much of that equipment is now reaching the age where bearings wear, grease dries and coastal corrosion starts finding the load-bearing welds. Because adults use it unsupervised — and children use it whether or not they're supposed to — a worn pivot or a seized bearing is a real injury risk, not a maintenance footnote.

What we check

• Moving parts and pivots — wear, play, seizure and lubrication state
• Pinch, crush and entrapment points to BS EN 16630
• Frames and welds — corrosion, cracking, coating breakdown
• Anchorage and foundations — movement and exposure
• Grips, seats and contact surfaces — condition and security
• Instruction signage — present, legible and correct for the equipment
• Surfacing and surrounding ground condition

Usually one visit with the play area

Most gyms share a site with a playground or MUGA; we inspect the lot in one visit, one report, one invoice.

What standard applies to outdoor gym equipment?

BS EN 16630 covers permanently installed outdoor fitness equipment. It sits alongside BS EN 1176 where a gym adjoins a play area, and the same routine / operational / annual inspection regime applies.

Is outdoor gym equipment really a safety risk?

Moving-part equipment — air walkers, cross trainers, rowers — carries pinch, crush and entrapment risks that static playground kit does not, and bearing wear changes how equipment moves. Corrosion on load-bearing frames is the other big one, particularly near the coast.

Can you inspect the gym in the same visit as our playground?

Yes — most outdoor gyms sit beside a play area, and we inspect both under one visit and one report, priced as a single site.
